Lower Dolpo Trek: Overview
Lower Dolpo Trek is an adventurous journey to the Dolpo region where the famous Shey Phoksundo National Park lies. This area is between the Tibet Plateau and Dhaulagiri range. The Dolpo region is home to the Bon people who follow Tibetan culture and lifestyle. The Lower Dolpo circuit trek starts from the place named Juphal and ends in it.
You have to cross the famous passes namely Numa La, Kangmara La and Baga La on the Lower Dolpo Circuit Trek. Dolpo trekking journey takes you across picturesque villages with amazing people. Trekkers witness the pristine Shey Phoksundo lake. Even if the Dolpo region is remote, it is renowned for trekking adventures. The Lower Dolpo Trek itinerary can be minimized or lengthened as per your requirements.

Lower Dolpo Trek Itinerary

You reach Kathmandu by flight on this day for the Lower Dolpo Circuit trek. After finishing the formalities at the international airport, you go to the hotel for rest. You will receive a briefing on the Lower Dolpo trek later. If you have any queries, you can put them forward.

We move to Nepalgunj by bus or flight for beginning the trek. Nepalgunj is in the western Terai of Nepal. It is close to the border of India and is near the Bardiya National Park. Overnight stop at a lodge or hotel.

We board on the plane to Jhupal; it will take around thirty-five minutes. We begin the Lower Dolpo trek from Jhupal. The trekking trail takes us down and winds along with the beautiful villages. We move along the riverside and walk past Roop Ghar to reach Dunai village. We stay here for the night.

We have breakfast and move to Tarakot. We follow the Bheri river and move forward, passing many villages which have mani stones, monasteries and terraced fields. Tarakot is a small village which lies above the river, Thuli Bheri. It was a trading point some years back. This village is home to the Magar people who follow Tibetan Buddhism.

We eat breakfast and head to Laini Odar en route Laisicap (2775 meters) and Kanigaon (2950 meters). We move to pass a river savouring the sight of Churen Himal and Putha Hiuchuli. Laini Odar is an incredible camping place which has waterfalls near it.

After breakfast, we move first to Chhyugar, which is at an altitude of 3440 meters. From there we move to Toltol (3530 meters). We pass through deep gorges and high cliffs to reach Nawarpani.

We have a fantastic journey as we walk along the Tarap riverbank passing Langa and Ghyamghar. Dho Tarap is a tremendous settlement which presents the soul of the Dolpo region. It is above a vast valley and is famous as the old trading point between Tibetan and Mustang traders.

We use this day to rest and explore the surrounding of Dho Tarap. We can see the Ringo Bumpa monastery which has a similar architecture to that of the Samye Monastery that is in Tibet. Other famous monasteries here are the Kakar Labrang Monastery. And Drakmar Dewa Monastery. There are essential monasteries around Dho Tarap namely Mekhyim monastery, Nom Gompa and Dhoro monastery. You will have to manage your time wisely to explore these monasteries.

We walk to the Numa La Base Camp as we cross the crystal mountain school, Tokyu village (4209 meters) and a health post. You shall find the fantastic views of Shering Gompa; this is a home for monks to stay.

The trek will feel challenging as we move to Danighar crossing Numa La Pass. We trek uphill on a steep trail; it will take around four hours. There are fantastic views of Mt. Dhaulagiri, CHuren Himal and Norbung Kang for you to enjoy. Later the trek will get easier as you follow the Gyambo Khola to get ahead.

We do an uphill climb to step on Gaga La Pass. Here, you can see the Norbung Lang Peak and the beautiful Phoksundo lake. Afterwards, we have to move down to Temche (4000 meters), which is a meadow.

We descend to Yak Kharka and move up to Ringmo across a forest of cypress, pines and juniper. There is a beautiful view of the waterfall and cliffs. After walking for thirty minutes from Ringmo, we reach Phoksundo.

We spend time exploring the Phoksundo lake, Ringmo village and the beautiful monasteries. Ringmo village is a Tibetan settlement. We may spot the majestic glaciers near the Phoksundo lake. Also, there are monasteries and religious places near the national park.

We have breakfast and move uphill. Then, we descend crossing Rechi and Chunuwar across the dense jungle of bamboo, pines and birches. You may enjoy the view of Phoksundo lake here.

We walk past the settlements of Kalagaonda and Shyanta across the arid terrain. And, we cross the fields of wheat and barley to reach the village of Jhupal.

How Difficult Is Lower Dolpo Trek?

If you are someone who likes solitary paths for trekking, summer and winter are the seasons suitable for it however we do not recommend it. The months from April to June and September to November are the best for Lower Dolpo Circuit trek. There is no much rainfall in March, April and May.
