Makalu Trek Itinerary

You reach the Tribhuwan International airport in Kathmandu for Makalu trek in Nepal. Then, you move to your hotel after completing formalities. You will receive a briefing on the Makalu trek after relaxing for some time. You get to meet the trekking team; the guides and you may discuss the essential gears and equipment for the Makalu circuit trek. Your tour agency helps you get the permits for the Makalu trek in Nepal. In case you land on Kathmandu at night, a similar briefing happens the following day after breakfast.

Next day, you move outside for a short tour around Kathmandu after eating breakfast. You shall go to the essential sites like Pashupatinath temple, Bouddhanath, Swoyambhunath and the Kathmandu Durbar square. This tour provides you with a look into Nepalese history and culture. Later, you may explore the local life and places nearby. You prepare for the Makalu trek.

We board on the plane to Tumlingtar; it takes around fifty minutes to reach there. The trail on the Makalu circuit trek first moves up to a jungle of Sal trees and rhododendron as we walk past many villages. We move across a plateau and walk uphill for around three hours. We set up our camps in a vast grass field. We move northward to get to Khandbari. Trekking head, we go to our campsite, which is our overnight stop.

We walk steadily ahead, passing tiny villages and dense forests. We move past bamboo forests following a ridge to get to Arun Than (1280 meters). We head to the Chichila village as we follow the bamboo groves on the rocky path to Sheka (1350 meters). Chichila is home to Gurung and other ethnic groups.

We wake up savouring the fantastic views of the Makalu mountain and other snowy peaks. We move towards a ridgeline enjoying the magnificent views on both sides. We trek down across a forest following a perennial river. Then, we move on a flat path for around an hour. Finally, we reach Num which lies on a ridge above the river Arun Koshi. Often, there is lightning and thunder at Num.

We descend on a steep trail across the Lumbang cornfields. The Makalu trek trail takes you over a suspension bridge. Afterwards, you go up along the jungle and some villages. The local people earn a living with agriculture. They grow paddy, potatoes, millet and seasonal vegetables. After walking up through a forest, you get to the campsite of Seduwa where you stay for the night.

We walk up the ridge which has Kasuwa Khola on the east and Ipsuwa Khola on the west. We have a relatively easy hike on this day as we walk across the bushes. We move across villages where farming takes place. And, we get to the camping spot below the national park office at last.

We trek on the uphill track moving through rhododendron forest. We will pass several ridges and yak herders. The trails take us to Chipola (2520 meters), and the path gets steeper. You will see a massive rock below Mani Danda. We have to carry lunch for the journey on this day. We stop at Khonga before we cross Shipton La and move to the Barun valley. Human settlements are sparse here, and tents lie on the sloppy hills.

On this day of Makalu base camp trek, we can enjoy the view of Peak 6 & 7 along with Chhamlang. We have to climb a staircase that is over the ridges. You will see a small pass, namely Ghungru La (4050 meters). The trail moves upward and gets steeper. We pass a forestand trek on a hill which has many prayer flags, Mani walls and scenic views. We walk down to witness a tiny lake. Then, we move upwards across the Shipton Pass. We relax for a while near the Kalo Pokhari lake. Afterwards, our team passes over the famous Keke La (4152 meters). We cross the pine and rhododendron forest to reach Mumuk. We stay in a tented camp here.

We leave Mumbuk to reach Nghekharka. You can witness the Barun river flowing across the trail as we move ahead looking at the incredible peaks like Mt. Peak 6 and 7. It is going to be a peaceful walk. We get to Yangrikharka (3610 meters) which is a small village on the base of the valley. We climb till Nghekharka from here and stay there.

We move past a beautiful waterfall and over a muddy ground to reach a stone hut. We pass the Mani wall to get to Yakkharka (4440 meters). We do a final climb to reach Merek. There is a marvellous panorama of the Peak 3, peak 4, Peak 5 and Chhamlang.

We head to the main highlight of the Makalu Base camp trek. We will see the Makalu as we move northwards to the valley. The trail follows the river till Shersong (4660 meters). There will be a gradual climb to reach a small pass. It is around 100 meters above the base camp. We trek down to steam and get to the base camp as we cross boulders. You can relish the view of south Makalu mountain. The base camp is at the height of around 5000 meters; there is no shelters/ vegetation here.

This day is an exploration day for enjoying the natural surrounding of Makalu mountain. We try to climb up the advance base camp because we may get a fantastic panorama of the Barun valley. We could climb the ridge which is on the northeast side of Shersong. You may spot the mighty Everest, Lhotse and Lhotse Shar. We retrace steps back to Shersong for overnight stay.

We continue to move down across the rockfall. We will climb the rocky structures to reach the Mumbuk shelter. We reach Khongma en route Shipton La.

We descend back to Tashigaon and walk to Seduwa after lunch. We set up a camp in Seduwa.

We start early to head to Chichila. The trekking journey shall be more comfortable as we move on the ridge to get to Chichila. It will take around five hours. We camp in Chichila.
