If you are someone who would love to understand the culture and lifestyle of someone different than you, you can go for the Gurung Culture trek where you can stay overnight with a Gurung family in a homestay to explore their way of doing things and living their everyday life. The trekking path takes you along beautiful Gurung villages, namely, Ghalegaun, Pashgaun, Bhujung, of Lamjung district and the villages like Thumsikot and Pakhrikot of Kaski district. The Gurung community of Nepal includes the Mongolian Tibetan ethnic people who dwell in the western part of Nepal. A large number of these people live in Gorkha, Lamjung, Dhading, and Baglung with a distinct language, traditions, and culture.
Along with the age-old culture, you will get the opportunity to witness the natural surrounding of the area with spectacular mountain peaks on the backdrop. Good to Know
Do
- Smile and greet the locals by saying the phrase “Namaste” or “Tashidelek”
- Make sure you walk in groups and keep a distance from people you see walking in front or behind you
- Please consult your guide if you are planning on trying something new while trekking
- Ask the guide about the things you might require next day as you can pack it in your pouch while rest is carried by the porter for convenience
- Please donations in the donation boxes at monasteries around the trekking zone where they do not have tickets for visitors
- Inform your guide if you feel uneasy with your health when ascending higher altitude
Don’ts
- DO not criticize the local culture and beliefs even though you are uneasy with it
- DO not take pictures of the local people without prior permission
- Do not feel awkward when people stare at you; they are just curious and have no ill intentions
- Do not expect extravagant facilities around the trekking zone; basic facilities can only be provided given the geographical difficulties
- Do not harm the floras and faunas during the trek; be responsible about the environment
- Do not give money to people; children and beggars because it may increase them to beg more from visitors
