overview

Nepal is a country filled with religious sites and holy places. It is a pilgrim for sites for devotees of Hinduism and Buddhism. Being a secular country Nepal offers refuge to followers of all religion. The historical sites of the country are of religious significance and boast of tales and fables from many years ago.

Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal is a primary location to explore the ancient Hindu tradition and culture. Previously known as Kantipur or Kastamandap, it means the city of wooden temples.

Back in the time of the kings, the city was believed to house more temples than the normal households. There are temples present at a very short from each other.

Some of the famous temples in the Kathmandu valley are:

  • Pashupatinath Temple (UNESCO World Heritage Site)
  • Bhaktapur Durbar Square (UNESCO World Heritage Site)
  • Kathmandu Durbar Square (UNESCO World Heritage Site)
  • Patan Durbar Square (UNESCO World Heritage Site)
  • Budanilkantha
  • Changu Narayan Temple (UNESCO World Heritage Site)
  • Boudanath Stupa (UNESCO World Heritage Site)
  • Swayambunath (UNESCO World Heritage Site)

These famous religious sites are rich on culture and ancient Nepalese architecture.

On our way to Pokhara, we come across Manakamana Temple which lies in the Gorkha district of Nepal. It is considered to be a very important Hindu temple dedicated to Goddess Bhagwati. Mana in Nepali means heart while Kamana means wishes. Rumors have it that the worshippers who visit this temple have their wishes fullfilled by the Goddess.

Pokhara is the biggest tourism city of Nepal and also the gateway to many popular trekking destinations like Annapurna Circuit Trek, Annapurna Base Camp Trek, and Macchapuchre Base Camp Trek to name a few.

Besides being an important tourist destination, Pokhara is also home to religious places like Tal Barahi Mandir, Bindhyabasini Temple, and Shanti Stupa.

Our main destination, Muktinath, lies in the foothills of Thorong La Pass (5,416 m) in the Mustang district. Muktinath is an integral part during the Annapurna Circuit Trek. It is considered to be religious site for worshippers of Hinduism and Buddhism.

The word Muktinath means the God of Moksha (Liberation). The locals also call it as Mukti Kshetra. It is a perfect example of religious secularism in Nepal, as the temple complex comprises of both Buddhist and Hindu shrines.
