Local tourist attraction

  • The Boudhanath Stupa is experiential. What we always recommend is visiting it either early in the morning or at sunset, when a procession of monks and local residents circumambulates the stupa, accompanied by the rhythmic hum of mantras and the clicking of many prayer wheels.
  • The Budhanilkantha Temple lies serenely at the foot of Shivapuri Mountain. The gigantic statue of reclining Vishnu is particularly serene early in the morning, before crowds arrive. Many visitors to the temple are surprised by the sense of calm and space around it, despite its proximity to the bustling center of Kathmandu.
  • Shivapuri National Park is the place to turn if the city has just been too much. The difference in air quality is palpable, and just walking within the premises has been known to be quite rejuvenating.
  • Shivapuri is a well-loved hiking trail, not only among the Nepalese but among foreign visitors, especially on weekends. There are some good forest trails, bird sightings, and hilltop views of the Kathmandu Valley, but the hiking trail itself is not difficult.
  • Also worth visiting are local Gumbas (monasteries), which can be points of interest for travelers seeking a quiet moment with a stunning view. If you get lucky, you may be able to sit through a local evening prayer session, and many of our guests say this is one of their favorite memories of visiting this region.
