In Nepal, Matatirtha Aunsi is a one-day festival. Mothers and motherhood are honoured on this day. People give their mothers cakes, jewellery, and other gifts on this day.

According to Hindu tradition, the festival is held on the new moon, which occurs in the lunar calendar month of Baisakh. Today in this article, we talk about Matatirtha Aunsi or Mother's Day.

Significance of Matatirtha Aunsi

Matatirtha Pond is a pilgrimage place in the western suburbs of Kathmandu where people come to honour their mothers who have passed away. It is a widely accepted fact that taking a holy bath in Mata Tirtha and offering tarpan today would assist his or her mother in attaining redemption and bringing happiness to the household.

On the day of Mata Tirtha Aunsi, a man walking through Mata Tirtha saw his dead mother in the pond, according to legend.

Mata tirtha aunsi, also known as Nepali Mother's Day, is a major Hindu festival in Nepal. In terms of celebration, the Nepali version of Mother's Day differs from the western world.

Children express their thanks to their mothers on this day. They bathe in holy water, pray for their mum, and present presents and sweets to her. Many that have lost their mothers go to Matatirtha to celebrate. They do Shradhha and Sida Daan after taking a holy bath (a mixture of rice grain and other food materials with clothes).

The Newar society commemorates the festival by presenting Saga to their mothers with presents. They take the candy and fruits to their mother's house in order to see her smile.

Matatirtha

Matatirtha is a small village and a former VDC (Village Development Committee) in Kathmandu District, Province 3 of Nepal. It is now part of Chandragiri Municipality. It had a population of 5,982 people and 1,314 households at the time of the census in 2018.

In a local election, Santosh Khadka was elected Ward Chairman of Matatirtha.

How did Matatirtha get its name?

Matatirtha is taken from two Sanskrit words: "Mata", which means mother, and "tirtha", which means holy spot. The VDC gets its name from a sacred pond dedicated to Mother in the VDC.
