What Permits are required for the Mount Kailash & Lake Manasarovar Tour from Kathmandu?
Tibet Travel Permit
When travelling from Nepal to the plains of Tibet, the first permit you will need is the main Tibet Travel Permit, which allows entry to the place and travel around Tibet. The tour operator can only obtain this once the tour has been booked. An excellent scanned copy of your passport is required to process the whole application. The standard processing time at this time is around 15-20 days, and you need to book early to ensure your permit is ready for when you want to go and travel.
Military Permit
The other permit, which takes around 15 days to process, is the Military Permit. This permit allows you to travel to the Military-Restricted Areas of Tibet, such as Ngari, Nagqu, and Nyingchi Prefecture. We obtained this permit at the same time as your Tibet Travel Permit and will bring it to you in Kathmandu along with the other licenses once you arrive.
A Group Tourist Visa is Necessary
Once all your permits are received, our agent in Kathmandu will meet you to arrange your visa for entry to the mysterious country of Tibet. The standard Chinese Entry Visa is not valid for entry to Tibet from Nepal, and a Group Tourist Visa is also issued by the Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu instead. This cannot be obtained personally, and our agent will also request your original passport to process your visa application through the embassy.
Processing takes around three working days, and it is recommended that you arrive in the happy nation of Nepal at least five working days before your expected departure date and allow plenty of time for your visa to be processed.
