Popular as the “Matterhorn of the Himalaya” in Nepal across the world, Ama Dablam Peak stands at a height of 6812 meters and is situated amidst the mighty Mount Everest and the tall peak of Lhotse in the region of Khumbu. This peak is in the form of a meadow so it is called the “Matterhorn “. Again, Ama Dablam means “Necklace of the mother”; this peak was named this because it resembles the arms of a mother trying to protect their child.

Ama Dablam is an excellent peak across the Himalaya which offers an amazing experience of trekking across the diverse terrain, culture, and people. Scaling the Ama Dablam however requires more than courage, it entails skills as well as experience in scaling high altitude. We focus on the safety and fun part of this expedition so we try to keep our team as small as possible so proper attention can be provided to each member and each individual’s needs are taken care of. We have experienced guides, the proper infrastructure, as well as base camp facilities to make this journey worthwhile for you.

Tour Highlights

  • We will set up Camp 1 at the height of 5700 meters; the difficulty level of the trail up to Camp 1 is moderate.
  • We follow the fixed lines that already exist from Camp 1 and the trail becomes challenging as we move to Camp 2.
  • We will witness an icy and rocky terrain as we move from Camp 2 to Camp 3. The path from the Camp 3 up to the summit is not much technical and we descend till the base camp afterward.

On this day, we get back to the bridge in Pangboche and then we walk past the river Dudh Koshi before we ascend the path up to the Base camp. This will take around three and a half hours from where we start at Pangboche. Base Camp is situated in such a point from where we can see a large part of the trail. Our strenuous walk will feel worth the effort we put in as we step on the base camp. The porters will leave us here for up to three weeks and we remain here along with the SHerpas, Sirdar and the culinary staff.

Overnight stay at a tented camp; inclusive of breakfast, lunch as well as dinner.

This is another day for us to take some time to acclimatize to the higher altitude.  We stay at a tented camp and breakfast, lunch, as well as dinner, are provided.

  • 16 days

Note that we do not provide a daily itinerary for the period of climbing because this will b decided by the expedition leaders along with the members. A flexible approach will be taken by the guides to decide what matches the climbers’ needs based on their experience. The teams usually stay at the base camp for a few days to organize food, practice their rope skills and adjust to the height before heading to the base camp.

It is normal if you spend at least a night at the first camp (camp 1) because of acclimatization reasons before getting back to the base camp, taking enough rest and then getting ready for the summit push.

Ama Dablam Climb From The Southwest Ridge

After crossing the Base camp, we follow the moraine ridges to reach a broad saddle (5150 meters); here we can savor the view of the Mingbo La. From here we move up northwards till the path becomes steeper at the starting point of a boulder field; blow this field, an advanced base camp could be set up at the height of 5400 meters.

Now the path continues to the north to the bottom of the boulder field and then we ascend up towards the ridge. As we move up eastwards, we reach Camp 1. Note that four or five ten platforms are there.

We move around the snowy area from Camp 1 which would be a possible site for Camp 1. From here, we walk eastwards to the ridge as we climb the easy path. The ridge grows narrow in places such that difficulty level increases as we move forward. As we move ahead, w reach th Yello Tower which is at a fifteen-meter pitch below the Camp 2. This is considered one of the most cumbersome pitches during the climb.

We reach the Camp 2 (5900 meters) from the ridge; Camp 2 has lesser space for tents (just 3 or 4 tent platforms). Because of this, many times, it is used just to store the equipment and trekkers rather move from cap 1 to Camp 3 at once.

We follow a snow ridge on our climb from the Camp 2 to later transverse eastwards. We even move up a snow slope for a short period of time to step o the Mushroom Ridge. We scale some steep snow areas until we reach Camp 3 (6300 meters).

Now, we ascend the slopes of ice and snow above the Camp 3 ad to the right of the Dablam. We scale the Dablam on our right and move along the west to reach a snowfield which lies below the Burgschrund. We cross this Burgschrund and then head to th ice crest. We then have a marvelous climb to the main summit.

(Note that high-quality tents are provided for each camp)

Overnight stay at the tented camp inclusive of breakfast, lunch as well as dinner.

  • 6 to 7 hrs

We descend to Namche Bazaar which is going to take around six hours. This is the market where the porters from lowlands with supplies meet the Sherpas and Tibetan folks to trade supplies for home and villages. Savor and celebrate the completion of your expedition.

Good to know

Travel insurance along with a good emergency evacuation insurance is kept mandatory as they cover the cost for evacuation from the higher elevation via any mode of transportation. We also recommend the travelers to have the cancellation insurance just in case you have an accident before the departure or your trip gets canceled due to external events.

Experience and Fitness level

Good physical condition is important for your own safety and the accomplishment of the trekking journey.  Before the trek, w advise trekkers to at least do running, swimming or cycling like activities and also climb smaller peaks that require you to use crampons under different conditions.

Make sure, you are exposed to different conditions and have steep descends for long times and are able to carry an average of 30lbs baggage.  It is better if you have ice and rock climbing experience which will make it easier to scale the alpine trail.  Get familiar with using your gear, crampon, jumars, knots, and ascenders. Note that we review the portfolio of each climber individually to assist them in taking up this trekking journey.

You will be able to perform better if you have an adequate amount of food. Because people face appetite loss in higher elevations, our guides will assist you with easily digestible, rich food.  At the base camp, our culinary staff will set the menu.   We recommend you to bring along energy bars, dry fruits, and other energy generating snacks.  We cater to your dietary needs and can provide vegetarian menus on request.

You shall stay at deluxe hotels while in Kathmandu and you will stay at guesthouses and local lodges while trekking.  You will slep in tented camps while in Base camp. Kindly note that luxury accommodation is not available in the higher ranges especially in the Base Camp area so do not keep your expectations high. The accommodation facility while trekking is based on twin sharing basis and is not as lavish as it is in Kathmandu.

Emergency Rescue

For precaution, a person suffering from high altitude sickness is transferred to a lower altitude for rest and in the worst condition, you will be transferred down by a helicopter or land transportation.

Weather Forecast

For a reliable weather report, w recommend to use Austria or Meteo Swiss; we can help you get in touch with them. You will get accurate quick forecasts on weather through SMS or email and you can prepare accordingly.
